LIFE in the PITS
Here’s a short list of publications I’ve found useful for reference, enlightening, and/or entertaining while
pursuing my writing career. Each title offers an insight into a particular element of publishing or has helped
define several of my own ‘ah-hah!’ moments. I’ve not included buy links simply to avoid favoring one book
store over another, but most of these books can be found or ordered, at just about any bookseller.

ON WRITING
By Stephen King
While this book isn’t new, it’s one I highly recommend to aspiring writers.  It won’t take you long to read it
and more importantly, you won’t fall asleep while turning the pages.

If you are looking for a straightforward book, such as, a step by step guide to writing a best selling novel, this
isn’t it. But what it is, written in his quirky straight forward fashion, (which I love so much), is an incredible
book about writing.

GOAL, MOTIVATION & CONFLICT
By Debra Dixon  (Gryphon Printing)
Every fiction writer should own this book. It is chock full of inspiration and advice on GMC. Ms. Dixon does a
phenomenal job of providing a clear understanding of fiction elements which will help an author with
characterization, plotting, scenes, and keeping the story on track.

THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE
By William Struck Jr. and E.B. White
This is an exceptional work, with clear principles, and concise writing. A definite must for any writer in search
of high-end English.

THE CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE
By University of Chicago Press Staff
I’m sure there’s a successful writer who hasn’t used this book for reference, but I’m not aware of them.
Every, and I mean all, writers should have a current copy of this book in their reference library.

THE WRITER'S JOURNEY: Mythic Structure For Writers
By Christopher Vogler
A classic work, and required reading for many in the entertainment business, this book explores the
relationship between storytelling and mythology. The association is very significant, and one every writer needs
to understand.

LINE BY LINE: How to Edit Your Own Writing
By  Claire Kehrwald Cook
The essential guide for all writers. With hundreds of examples of original and edited sentences, this book
provides information about editing techniques, grammar, and usage for every writer from the student to the
published author.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR FOR DUMMIES
By Geraldine Woods
A great reference tool, this one is self-explanatory. This book is a handy guide for those of us who still aren’t
quite sure which came first, the noun or the verb.
Don't forget, there are other avenues besides books to improve your craft. You can attend writing classes,
seminars, and conferences. You can also join writer's organizations. While I highly recommend giving each of
these at least a chance, remember, the most important thing you can do, is write. Get those words on the
page.
